Wow. A Gawker article with a modicum of intelligent thought. Comments are still typically moronic.

Not that I agree with everything in the piece. I haven't read enough on Syria to have what I would consider a fully formed opinion, and I don't want to start a flame war. But observing that the general is critiquing a war veteran as a know nothing civilian is at least seemingly relevant.
The comments, of course, include at least one guy calling for, without irony, the U.S. military to stage a coup, among other similarly aneurysm inducing reasoning.

Syria...I'll just say it.

Let them kill each other. Chemicals, nukes; I don't care. Why is it that we need to be the world's police? Why can't they sort their own shit out?

Has no one in the history of the Middle East learned all the terrible crap that happens when the West interferes? LET THEM DO WHAT THEY WANT.

If they start attacking your borders perhaps you can retaliate.

It is an unpopular opinion but lets be perfectly honest, why can we kill each other with our own civil war yet other countries can't? What gives us ANY right to invade a sovereign nation and impose our will?

Till they launch rockets outside of their own borders and attack other countries, we have no god given right to shoot at them.

Also, SupremeKiwiIHateAmericanCarsCarsInDepth.ComRosettoViadouchaZorro please leave. We had nothing but peace since your departure.

The problem is that if we don't interfere, we'll get hate and flak from countries that we frequently trade and rely on, and they'll pull support for us unless we help their friends. It's simply not worth the national cost, especially with the current US economy.

It's a global economy. That's why no one "goes to war" anymore, they more or less contain whatever violence erupts as best as possible. The cold war did more than just teach us that Nukes are not a zero-sum game, it sort of started the whole concept of economic warfare, where regulation and information could be more powerful. A tiny increase in fuel costs could do more damage than a small nuke, in the long run.

Or, in other words, it's hard to control people when they're dead.

Believe me, if we had nothing to gain economically from being somewhere, we wouldn't be there. The US doesn't give two shits about countries they can't benefit from. The thing is... with today's technology, we can benefit from every country . And that has helped us out a lot, but really fucked up trying to maintain that optimal position.

Apparently the US has been planning to attack Syria since at least 2001.

If they want to ensure control of the Middle East they'll need a few of these since that is the only way you'll ever assure yourself of a true clean slate.

Even with technology, there are still certain countries of no benefit to the USD. If the Middle East had no oil, they'd be a lot more like Africa.
